dc.description.abstractThe diurnal variations of wind speed at 20 stations located in different parts of Costa Rica are analyzed. At the majority of the stations, the wind speed starts increasing at about 5 a.m. and reaches its maximum value near noon. The minimum values occur during the night or early morning. During the night the variation in wind speed is relatively small. The analysis of the hourly wind speed distributions, as well as the analysis of monthly wind speed distribution, indicate that the stations of the Central Valley and the North-Pacific region, except Puntarenas and Taboga (located near the coast), show a significant decrease in wind speed between April and May, as well as a significant increase in wind speed between November and December. These periods coincide with the transition periods from the dry to the rainy season and from the rainy to the dry season, respectively. The results show that La Tejona station presents the highest wind speed values. The lowest values in wind speed are found in the stations located in the South-Pacific region.
