Abstract
The precipitation patterns during El Niño events of 1992-93, 1994-95 and 1997-98 are analyzed for the Arenal River Basin. Pentad data are used to study the rainfall distribution for Naranjos Agrios (in the northwestern part of the basin), La Unión (central part) and Caño Negro (southeastern portion) during those events. Precipitation anomalies are compared with the reservoir level and with the mean accumulated rainfall for the basin. From the results obtained, El Niño events are generally associated with a decrease in the reservoir level, although some other factors also affect this parameter. Naranjos Agrios is affected by a kind of Pacific type of climatological conditions, whereas, Caño Negro reveals more influence from the Caribbean.
