Item A climatic feature of the tropical Americas: The trade wind easterly jet(Tópicos Meteorológicos y Oceanográficos, 1998) Amador, JUsing data from the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis global monthly means for the period 1982-1994, a previously not reported featura of the climate circulation of the tropical Americas is documented: The Trade Wind Easterly Jet. This jet develops in low levels (especially in 925, 850 and 700 mb) in the central part of the Caribbean Sea and from Mat to July, the wind increases to máximum and then, the mean current decreases from the later to September. Values in excess of 14 ms -1 are observed in the 925 mb zonal mean field during July. Basic dynamical estimares of horizontal wind shear show that this flow is barotropical unstable during the peak of the summer months at low levels, so, disturbances may grow from the mean kinetic energ of the flow. Cross circulations associated to the jet exit región are consistent with the low level vertical velocity (dp/dt) and a máximum of precipitation found in the earstern Carribbean near the Central American coast during the summer months. Item Imágenes satelitales en la predicción de eventos esporádicos de escala sinóptica: Antecedentes del huracán César como un evento sinóptico.(Tópicos Meteorológicos y Oceanográficos, 1999) Banichevich, A; Castro, VIt is shown the kind of information that meteorological satellite images con give, particulary for the case of geostationary satllite GOES – 8for the event of hurricane Cesar. Item VIMHEX 1972 revisited: The life cycles of two tropical convective mesosystems over land(Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, 1998) Fernández, WThe evolutions of two slow-moving convective mesosystems observed in Venezuela during VIMHEX-II were studied using time changes in radar echo characteristics. The duration of the echo, maximum echo area, maximum echo height and mean echo velocity were about 6 hours, 5000km2, 16km, and 95°/5.2m s−1 for mesosystem A and about 11 hours, 12000km2, 14km, and 90°/3.2m s−1, for mesosystem B, respectively. The rainfall distributions associated with the mesosystems are described and correlated with the radar echo characteristics. The synoptic conditions are discussed, as well as the modification of the environment produced by the mesosystems. The relative wind profiles suggest that mesosystem A behaved more like a typical tropical squall line, with inflow at almost all levels at the front of the mesosystem, while mesosystem B behaved like a typical mid-latitude squall line, with inflow at lower levels and outflow at upper levels at the front of the mesosystem.
